You surprised me. A book, you ask? Yes, I am working on children’s books. Let me explain my reasoning.

Over the course of my career, the kinds of projects I worked on were hugely expensive and public-private-non-profit partnerships made them possible. Eventually, these partnerships took me into public policy as well. Since, I am an activist at heart, that suited me just fine.

For example, several of my clients were alternative energy producers. Back then, it was a tiny rebel industry, pitted against giant fossil fuel companies. A David and Goliath story. Since it would take 20 years to overcome the financial and political obstacles, I suggested we get ahead of the public opinion curve. Educate the public by educating teachers and students. In turn, students would go home and educate their parents. Guess what? It is frigging worked. The first time we launched a school-based project focused on alternative energy, 15,000 people showed up. And this happened in the early 1990s, in a Republican Red, rural, oil producing community. Next thing ya know, I was overwhelmed with work. Today, that little, rural community has more than 2,000 high-paying, high-tech jobs in alternative energy, plus it hosts one of the largest training centers.

That’s the reason I’m focusing on children’s books. By the time we get America on track, I’ll be in my grave. Before I leave this earth, I want to help the next three generations feel free to be creative. I want them to believe in and value their own creativity enough, to work and develop it. They don’t have to live with all the shit they’ve inherited, they can make a better world. All they need to do, is believe in their own creative power.

Besides, kids are my favorite people.

I’d like to know what you think of this?

Rural America is my home. I serve diner, gourmet, seven course, and homecooked thoughts — but spare me chain food served on thoughtless trains of thought.
