White children are prohibited from joining any activity where they are only white person. Unfortunately coddling and babying white children this way, creates adults who lack the self-confidence necessary to reach beyond the familiar. Unable to move freely in the world, white children grow resentful of “others” who they hold responsible for limiting their choices.
The quickest and easiest way to escape the tiny white world is to walk out. The student who left during that film, chose to join the big world outside that room. The law of averages is on his side. His chances of success are much better, than they are, for those who stayed. The simple truth is that there are more people outside the white world, than in it.
You will know your anti-racism lessons have succeeded when your white students walk out as well.
