We're also having a hard time here in Kentucky. My journal is full of this and that went wrong, and try this and that next year notes. I have a freezer full of berries that ripened on the vine before they fattened up. It took three weeks to find the bug-gers eating my pepper plants. The plants recovered, but its kind of late to hope for fruit. Its August and one tomato finally reached maturity (thank goodness for good neighbors with happy tomato vines). My seed garden took off, then yellowed right before my eyes. The land could not absorb the water fast enough and killed two young fruit trees.

Three years ago, a tornado swept through here, and 3 days ago, high winds took two more trees down at my place, and my kids lost two trees where they live higher up the mountain. Of course, one of my trees took the electric cattle fence down with it.

The bull is doing his job and there are four more calves in the meadow. Our pond and stream are full. Storms are dumping so much water all at once, our road needs repair and I'm mapping out beds to re-direct the water in the future.

And all the while, I am feeling grateful for a life like this.

Rural America is my home. I serve diner, gourmet, seven course, and homecooked thoughts — but spare me chain food served on thoughtless trains of thought.
