The only reason Jan-6 seems innocuous to anyone now, is because the insurrectionists failed – so spectacularly. These people were convicted for what they tried to do, not their failure to pull it off.

I think that convicting these people was far more important than convicting Trump (of anything). Take followers away, and leaders lose their power. Thanks to these convictions, Trump’s followers will be less likely to follow him off another cliff. I’d venture to guess, that today, at least 80% of Trump’s followers are in name only (and will not risk themselves for him again).

Normally, I’m not an optimist and surely hope I’m right.
