The Democratic Party made the same mistake in the late 1990s, when the DLC abandoned rural voters and thought the suburban voters could make up the shortfall. And look how that turned out - once solid rural Democrats started voting Republican.

I agree with you, getting people NOT to oppose you can be more important than getting people to support you.
