Super Mrs. C, I recently read a point of view, that I still have not digested. I return to the years before the 1980 Mariel Boatlift that brought 125,000 Cubans to America.

In 1959 Castro came to power and more than 200,000 of Cuba’s wealthiest, professionals and members of the Batista government – known as the “golden exiles” – fled the country. By 1973, another 300,000 “golden exiles” had arrived in the U.S.

In a short 14 years, 14% of the Cuban population had left the country. In turn, America had absorbed 14% of Cuba’s entire population.

How did the loss of educated, professional and wealthy people impact Cuba? Did they weaken Castro by leaving – or strengthen him? Did they help people left behind in Cuba – or hurt them?

Over and over and over again, Cuba’s golden elites said that they came to America to work against Castro, so they could return to Cuba. As I watch Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Florida I am also asking how did America’s Cuban immigration policies impact America - especially our foreign policy?

I am interested in your thoughts.

Rural America is my home. I serve diner, gourmet, seven course, and homecooked thoughts — but spare me chain food served on thoughtless trains of thought.
