Religion and science agree on the beginning of human life.

At very beginning of creation, the bible explains, when and how human life begins… “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” Genesis 2:7

Clearly, the g-d of the bible creates human life, outside the womb. Just as G-d did not create human life in a pond of water, He did not create human life in a fluid filled sack inside a woman’s womb either. G-d created human life in the air. Even then, G-d does not always breathe the breath of life into every fetus that leaves a woman’s womb. Even more remarkable, one breath from G-d is not enough. People must breathe constantly – or die.

If you really want to feel close to G-d, spend one hour counting every breath you take, for each one is G-d’s breath. Humans can live only as long as they are able to breathe air in and out of their lungs 960 times an hour (23,040 times a day, 8,409,600 times a year). The person who lives to 80 will take about 672,768,000 breaths in a lifetime. To put that in perspective, an 80-year-old needs less than 30,000 meals in a lifetime.

We know from experience that humans can live three weeks without food, three days without water, and three minutes without air. Think not? See how long you can hold your breath.

Contrary to Christian teachings, life is made possible by the very last major organ to develop – and that organ is the lungs. In fact, the lungs are not fully developed until thirty-five (35) weeks after conception. It’s like G-d knew pregnancy would always be a difficult, often impossible challenge, and intentionally left the lungs ‘til last.

In my mind, the pro-life movement has created a dangerous fallacy that threatens the life of all newborns. Considering the fact, that gestation in horses and dolphins is one year, and two years in elephants and whales - doesn’t it seem odd that gestation in humans is a meager 9-months? What if science is correct? What if human gestation actually takes 3 to 4 years? What if the last 3 years of human gestation occurs outside the womb – not inside of it? But that’s another story and I will end here.

Rural America is my home. I serve diner, gourmet, seven course, and homecooked thoughts — but spare me chain food served on thoughtless trains of thought.
