Perhaps, we need something different. How about some ideas folks?
Instead of standing, seat the candidates at two simple four-legged tables, that do not hide their legs and feet. Instead of sitting, have the moderators stand at podiums, in front of the seated candidates.
Stop the clock, the second one candidate interrupts the other, and let the interrupter talk until their done. Then mute the interrupter’s mic and give the other candidate the same amount of time to talk about anything they please. In this way, interrupting works against a candidate instead of for them.
Place a solid wall between the candidates so they can’t see each other, but the audience and moderators can see both of them. This way, the candidates will have to use their ears, instead of their eyes, to understand what is happening.
Instead of human moderators, use a teleprompter to present the questions – and do not ask both candidates to answer the same question. In this way, candidates would have to read the questions out loud, before they could answer them.
Give both candidates the same amount of time and put a clock behind each of them that winds down as they speak. In this way, candidates can use their time strategically. They could save up time for a big ending speech. They could save time for questions that really interest them. They could also silence themselves before the end of the debate.
Have the candidates formulate the questions in advance. Moderators would say, this question was submitted by Trump (or Harris). That way, we’d all know who wrote the questions.
Write a few hundred questions on a piece of paper, fold them in half, and put them in a bucket (like a lottery or a bingo spin machine). Then have each candidate take turns pulling a question out of the bucket, and handing it to a moderator who reads it out loud.
Okay, fellow readers its your turn. What are your ideas?
