Perhaps a parent's perspective would be of value. As a parent, the historical ignorance I encountered among K-12 teachers was shocking.

Unfortunately, teachers teach what they’ve been taught– and that is the root of the problem.

White supremacy is rooted in ignorance, and yet, white supremacist history is the only American history the vast majority of K-12 teachers know.

Ignorance this deep and pervasive cannot be cured by good intentions, self-examination or awareness. Overcoming ignorance requires teachers to read, study and learn. .

Until universities start teaching teachers American history accurately and completely, ignorance will be their legacy. Until a teaching credential requires a solid grasp of American history, ignorance will prevail. As long as ignorance prevails, white supremacy will too.

If learning is not a lifelong commitment, teachers should find another job. Here on Medium, William Spivey publishes several historical articles a week and white teachers would learn a lot by reading them every week.

Rural America is my home. I serve diner, gourmet, seven course, and homecooked thoughts — but spare me chain food served on thoughtless trains of thought.
