Mr. Atkinson, your comment suggests you have never been the only white person in some part of your daily life, such as your family, work, church, or social circle. It sounds like one of your in-laws is not white and you are basing your opinion on how well he/she “fits-in” your white world.

Until you’ve spent a few years of your daily life in non-white spaces, your experience is too limited to offer advice to people who are far more experienced than you.

Unfortunately, it really does require years of experience in non-white spaces to educate white people. As white people, we’ve been so conditioned, it takes a whole lot of repeat experiences before we are able to “see” and “hear” what is happening right in front of us. While I am sure prejudice is happening right in front of you, constantly, I am just as sure that you simply do not see or hear it. If there are any children in this melanin rich family of yours, do them a favor and get yourself some experience in places where you are the only white person around. In other words, put yourself in those children's shoes, before you start offering them advice.

Rural America is my home. I serve diner, gourmet, seven course, and homecooked thoughts — but spare me chain food served on thoughtless trains of thought.
