Laura, you sparked an old memory and made me cry.
I was just a kid, still in high school the second time Tom Bradley ran for Mayor of Los Angeles.
I was with family having lunch at Canters, when Tom Bradley came in. Bradley had a long relationship with people in that part of town and walked around the tables talking to people. Eventually, he came to our table and stood between Gramma and me. It was hot that day and Gramma had taken her sweater off, and I saw Bradley's face when he saw her arm. Tom Bradley was a very tall man, and built like a football player. But when that man got down on his knees beside Gramma, they were eye to eye, and he leaned over and whispered something in her ear. She patted his hand and said, you have our votes, and they talked a while.
Gramma never told us what he said, but it was obvious that Bradley knew what that tattoo meant and where it had come from.
As I always say, I save my tears for beauty, and that memory always makes my cry.
