Kaepernick took a knee and the sight of grace moved me to tears. What did I see in Kaepernick ? I saw a strong man, an accomplished man, a wealthy man, and a moral man so moved and so pained he was willing to lower himself to his knee to beg for the killing to stop. I also saw a kindred spirit, an artistic spirit, a man who understood the power of imagery. Rather than rise with fist in air, Kaepernick lowered himself to one knee – and changed the world. At the same time Kaepernick was willing to beg for life, his other knee preserved his dignity and hard-earned respect. In this simple gesture, Kaepernick showed us the way out of the intersection between war and peace.
Kaepernick showed me that George Washington was still on his knee at Valley Forge, praying for a great nation to be born - and that truth broke my heart.
