Just in case you have not seen the quilts of Gees Bend, I thought you would enjoy hearing these women's stories, and seeing their work. It took a bit of hunting, but I found a good piece in the Smithsonian. The exhibit catalog, has a lot more stories, but this is a good overview.

The article in the New York Times regarding the controversy is a bit old. I'm sorry I do not know the outcome.
