Wherever you see inequality, you can be sure the nice side of inequality was paid for by taxpayers - not companies or private homeowners.

I've been working remotely from a small mountain town since 1984. Back then, it didn't matter where I lived, my clients were all over the country and several other countries as well. It felt like I lived on airplanes. It wasn't until 2000 that the internet was useful to businesses like mine.

Back in 1993, when Silicone Valley was still farmland, I was working on rural land-use and development when a new nonprofit, called Joint Ventures Silicone Valley entered the scene. JVSV had more money than G-d and the power that came with it.

Overnight, the pittance of federal and state money dedicated to rural California was flowing straight into Silicone Valley. It was like the California Water Project a hundred years ago, except instead of water, technology was being funneled to special people. Soon enough, the entire Bay Area (aka ) had the infrastructure necessary for technology workers.

Its 2021 folks and high speed internet STILL has not reached my side of the street in this California mountain town. Every time it snows, I have to go outside and wipe the snow off the satellite dish to catch a signal. I'm dreaming of fiber and 5 miles away, Spectrum just started laying old fashioned cable for frigging cable tv. I gave up, packed up and moved to Kentucky (true).

My point is simple. You can't work from nowhere without spending money to buy your own infrastructure. Of course it can be done - I did it. But it costs you a lot of money - the ouch kind of money.

These tech companies did not pay for their infrastructure - taxpayers paid for it. Now they want remote workers to pay for their own infrastructure and take salary cuts at the same time.
