It took a lot of force to break a car window, which suggests the door fell down - rather than closing. The motors in those garage doors pull the door up, then lock them in place and when the lock is released, the motors push the door down.

Old garage doors made of wood are much heavier than aluminum, in which case the motor keeps the door from falling too fast, as gravity pulls it down. But even aluminum doors are heavy when rolled up, so the motor has to work against gravity as well.

Don't leave us in suspense. Let us know the diagnosis - I'm betting on a failed lock safe mechanism. Something in some ratchet device broke off and down the door went like a ton of bricks.
