Personally, I think the Chinese and the west understand power very differently. Instead of global dominance (as we understand it), I think the Chinese are trying to shift the world away from western ideology. By word and deed, they are offering the world a different way.
If the Chinese succeed, western ideologies will collapse all by themselves and take western power down with it. Nuclear bombs cannot destroy ideology; as long as one person survives, ideology does too.
If I'm right, and this is an ideological contest, the west is as weak as a limp rag. Western ideologies have proven miserable failures. All over western countries, people are searching for answers, that western ideology cannot provide. The rise of Buddhist related thinking, and the steep decline of religious affiliation is just one of hundreds of symptoms of western ideological collapse.
