Back when I was a member of our school board, another member moved and we appointed his replacement. I’d known the appointee, David, a long time, and when he asked how I approached the job, this is what I told him.

Once David agreed to pretend, I was magical, I told him that in 15 years his daughter would be diagnosed with cancer. Whether it was curable, or terminal, would depend on decisions he made while he was on our school board. You see, David, somewhere in our school district, there is one child who has the cure for your daughter’s cancer. Your job is to make sure that child makes it to medical school, because if you don’t, your daughter will die. So tell me, which child can save your daughter’s life?

We walked a while longer and David finally said, the only way he could save his daughter’s life, was to make sure that every child in our district, could make it to medical school (and I agreed).

To put it bluntly, white supremacy kills people, including white men, white women and white children.

Rural America is my home. I serve diner, gourmet, seven course, and homecooked thoughts — but spare me chain food served on thoughtless trains of thought.
