Anyone who comes to Medium to make money off their writing is a fool. Anyone who considers themselves a writer, because they get lots of claps, reads, highlights and followers on Medium is a silly fool. There are a hundred times more fools than writers on Medium which makes it very hard on readers.

As I've pointed out to Medium, several times, making Medium: The Best Reader Experience possible would go a long way, towards building and sustaining the platform. I say this for a reason: Medium already provides a better experience for readers, than Substack (by a country mile) or any other writers platform, I've found yet. IOW, the reader experience is Medium's cutting edge. If Medium improved the reader experience even more, they would trounce their competition.

Doc, what you are describing is evidence of writers struggling to find readers so they can make some money. It is also evidence of readers struggling to find something good to read, so they can make use of their subscription dollars.

When I noticed Medium writers publishing their old Medium articles on Substack, I wondered why they thought Medium readers would pay to subscribe to their Substack page? Clearly, they are trying to build a new, perhaps bigger audience on Substack and I wish them luck.

With the sole exception of Cory Doctorow, who publishes on his own website, which is free for readers, I have not found a Medium writer worth paying money for a subscription to their work alone. IOW, the collective writings here on Medium is what makes this site valuable, to readers, like me.

Well, that's my thoughts for the day. Keep up the good work. As you know, I subscribe to email notices for your work - which in my mind, is the only measurement worth anything at all.

Rural America is my home. I serve diner, gourmet, seven course, and homecooked thoughts — but spare me chain food served on thoughtless trains of thought.
