If I haven't already mentioned this, I think you would really enjoy Demon Copperhead. Barbara Killingsworth won the Nobel for that book and it is a truly insightful, instructive and moving read - especially for people with ties to hillbilly country - or an interest in the opioid epidemic, or rural culture.
I attribute a good deal of the anger showing up in rural voting patterns, to the effing prison industry. Our community depends on groundwater, and we spent 25 years fighting to get one prison with 5,500 inmates and 5,700 employees to put in a sewage treatment plant. Until we won that fight, 11,000 people a day were shitting, urinating, vomiting and bleeding into our aquifer.
